Myth No. 1: All-Season Tires Are Good Enough For Winter

Most cars, trucks, and SUVs arrive from the factory with all-season tires. These are a great option most of the year. However, he name is misleading. All-season tires are designed for moderate weather—wet roads, light snow, and mild temperatures—but not for the deep cold of a Canadian winter.

When the temperature dips below 7°C, the rubber in all-season tires hardens, losing the flexibility needed to grip icy or snowy surfaces. Winter tires, on the other hand, are made with specialized rubber compounds that stay soft in cold weather, maintaining traction when you need it most.

So while all-season tires might get you through a chilly October morning, they can struggle to stop safely on a frozen January road.

Myth No. 2: You Don’t Need Winter Tires If You Have All-Wheel Drive

Modern all- and four-wheel drive systems are better and more user-friendly than ever. But neither all- nor four-wheel drive helps a vehicle stop any faster; they help distribute power to all four wheels for better traction when starting or climbing.

All- or four-wheel drive can help you get moving in the snow, but only winter tires help you stay in control once you’re moving.

Myth No. 3: Winter Tires Are Too Expensive to be Worth It

At first glance, buying a second set of tires can seem like a big expense. But when you break it down, winter tires are actually a cost-saving investment. because:

  • You extend the life of your all-season or summer tires by alternating sets.
  • You reduce your risk of collisions, which means avoiding costly repairs and insurance claims.
  • Some provinces and insurers even offer winter tire discounts on premiums.

When you factor in safety and longevity, winter tires often pay for themselves within a couple of seasons.
