Tips to Remember For Fall Driving

When the seasons change, there are a lot of things that can suddenly shift to make conditions more difficult for drivers. Things like the lower position of the sun in the sky and fall leaves all present driving hazards. With fall really hitting its stride now, the team at Davis Chevrolet thought it would be helpful to provide a few tips to remember for fall driving to prevent accidents and help you avoid potential danger. Let’s take a closer look at what our team put together.

Be Careful Driving Over Wet Leaves

As the leaves begin to fall, they don’t just create scenic landscapes—they also pose a serious risk on the road. When leaves become wet from rain or morning dew, they create a slick surface that can reduce tire traction, making it harder to stop or turn safely. If you encounter leaves on the road, our team suggests that you:

  • Slow down when driving on roads covered with leaves, especially after rain.
  • Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns on leaf-covered streets.
  • Keep a safe distance from other vehicles to allow more stopping time.

Fewer Daylight Hours

One of the hallmarks of autumn is short days and long cold nights. With fewer daylight hours, drivers will need to acclimate themselves to travelling in the dark. You can protect yourself, other drivers and pedestrians by:

  • Make sure your headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are clean and in working order.
  • Adjust your eyes to the darkness before driving at night by dimming dashboard lights.
  • Watch out for pedestrians, especially around school zones and residential areas.

Autumn Sun Glare Problems

The sun sits lower on the horizon during the fall season. This can create glare problems when travelling east in the morning or west in the evening. Sun glare can make it difficult to see traffic signals, road markers and other potential hazards on the road. Safety experts suggest drivers:

  • Keep sunglasses in the car and wear them when driving in bright sunlight.
  • Use the sun visor to block direct rays.
  • Clean your windshield inside and out to reduce glare caused by dirt and streaks.
